COVID-19 Underscores the Importance of the Greater Lawrence Summer Fund
During a typical summer, 40 children from Greater Lawrence have the opportunity to spend a week at Windrush Farm in North Andover, one of the oldest therapeutic riding centers in the country. Through the farm’s Giddy Up & Grow program, not only do the kids learn to ride and care for the ponies, but they are also taught how to harvest vegetables from the farm’s bountiful garden, bake zucchini bread and engage in literacy activities based on stories starring the farm’s fabled residents.

Investing in Human Potential: Antidote to Bleak Labor News
As we navigate through and past the COVID-19 pandemic, Essex County has within our grasp the antidote to recent labor market reports: human potential. Prior to COVID-19, Massachusetts had long enjoyed one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, but things have changed. While state data for June is not yet available, the Bay State’s May unemployment rate of 16.3% tied for the 4th highest in the country and was three percent higher than the national rate at the time.
